Queen-Elisabeth2Despite rumors to the contrary, it looks as if Queen Elizabeth 2 will still be transformed from a classic ocean liner into a floating luxury hotel. Nakheel, the Dubai-owned developers on the task, says that it remains steadfast in its dedication to the project. In response to media speculation regarding the plan in the wake of the current economic climate, the company issued a press release, saying “that there is no question of QE2 being operated as a cruise liner or of her being sold to any third party whatsoever.” (But if it were, Cruise Critic members have already decided a new fate for the queen.)

The statement continues: “The ultimate goal is to renovate and refurbish QE2, and for her to be the focal point of a luxury precinct, dedicated to her, that will recreate an authentic luxury ocean liner ambience and lifestyle.” QE2 is currently berthed at Port Rashid where the vessel has been since its arrival in Dubai on November 26, 2008. Nakheel has been conducting a comprehensive inventory and evaluation of the ship in its current state, and has commissioned up-to-date drawings by engineers. Though nothing has been finalized, early proposed changes have included replacing QE2’s funnel with a glass structure housing penthouse suites; creating a 500-seat theater for West End-style shows; and gutting cabins and public spaces to make room for larger rooms and apartments.

Nakheel has estimated that this initial design process will not be complete until after summer 2009. When that time comes, a full time-line for refurbishment will be released. The company intends to keep QE2 in Port Rashid until the actual refurbishment begins. The company is also considering opening QE2 to visitors in her current condition for a short period of time before her refurbishment begins. A final decision on this is expected within the next month or so.

1,000 special art pieces to grace Burj Dubai

More than 1,000 specially commissioned pieces of art will adorn the interiors of Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building, and the surrounding Emaar Boulevard, developer Emaar Properties announced on Wednesday.

Pride of place in the iconic structure’s residential lobby will be an artwork featuring 196 bronze and brass alloy cymbals – representing the 196 countries of the world – suspended on titanium rods anchored at the bottom of two pools.

Visitors to the lobby will be able to hear a distinct timbre as the cymbals, which are plated with 18-carat gold, are struck by dripping water, intended to mimic the sound of water falling on leaves, Emaar said in a statement.

Emaar chairman Mohamed Alabbar handpicked ‘World Voices’, which was created by internationally-renowned Spanish artist Jaume Plensa to symbolise reeds in a lake.

The year-long selection process was led by the building’s US-based architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), which approached international and Middle East artists to submit concepts for the centerpiece of the lobby more than a year ago. Plensa’s winning design was chosen from a shortlist of five.

“Art is central to the Burj Dubai project, not only as a visual statement but as a means to link cultures and communities,” said Alabbar. “Thousands of people from around the world have collaborated to achieve an iconic landmark, the world’s tallest building.”

The 1,000 art pieces will include a wide range of contemporary artists as well as museum-standard historic art recognising the Gulf’s unique heritage, said George Efstathiou, the managing partner for SOM leading the Burj Dubai team.

‘World Voices’ is Plensa’s largest permanent indoor installation and his first permanent commission in the Middle East.

Among his most famous works is the ‘Crown Fountain’ in Chicago, which comprises two 16-metre high towers, glass, stainless steel, LED screens, light, wood, granite and water.

He has also completed ‘Breathing’, a monument to fallen journalists at the BBC headquarters in London.

Standing at over 800 metres tall, Burj Dubai is at the centre of Downtown Burj Dubai, a 500-acre mega project Emaar is creating in the heart of Dubai. It is scheduled to open in September.

bringing the iconic cultural name and its tourist pulling power one step closer to the oil-rich Gulf.

Visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed al-Nahayan attended a ceremony in a luxury UAE hotel to mark the start of construction of the museum, expected to be completed by 2013.

They also inaugurated an exhibition on “Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi,” at which works of art from the Louvre and other French museums will be on display until July 2. Also on show are some of the new museum’s first acquisitions.

Under a 30-year agreement, Abu Dhabi will pay 400 million euros (555 million dollars) for the Louvre brand name and for hundreds of artworks loaned from the Paris museum for periods of between six months and two years.

The new museum on Saadiyat (“Happiness”) island off Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital, has been designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

It will be housed in a 24,000-square-metre (258,000-square-foot) building topped by a dome inspired by traditional Arab architecture.

“The Abu Dhabi Louvre project is unique and will remain so. It is not an attempt to duplicate the Louvre,” Henri Loyrette, president of the Paris Louvre, said at Tuesday’s ceremony.

Abu Dhabi’s will be “a new museum, the bearer of two cultures and two traditions,” he added.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of five museums to be built on Saadiyat island, a vast complex of luxury hotels, golf courses, marinas and private villas set for completion in 2018.

The complex is part of Abu Dhabi’s plans to secure a larger slice of the Gulf’s booming tourist industry.

However the development has come under fire from Human Rights Watch, which in a report focused on Saadiyat this month accused the Abu Dhabi authorities and global institutions of failing to tackle abuse of foreign labourers.

“It’s very important to be vigilant about security conditions, comfort and respect for the workforce,” Nouvel told reporters on Tuesday.

“The problem today is that architects are no longer the complete masters of a project the way they were 50 years ago … but we are still very vigilant. On each site we ask to see workers’ accommodation.”

Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Development and Investment Company, the government arm charged with developing Saadiyat, rejected claims of abuse on the island.
