Dubai’s Jumeirah Group plans to open its first hotels in Brazil as rising incomes in Latin America’s largest economy and the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic games generate demand, according to a report.

“The time is right now for us to be entering the Brazilian market,” James Erlacher, senior vice president of development for the Americas at the Dubai-based Jumeirah Group, told the Bloomberg newswire in an interview in New York.

Jumeirah’s priority is to operate hotels in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s biggest cities, and it’s also considering resorts “primarily in the northeast part of the country,” Erlacher said.

According to the newswire, The Four Seasons expects to reach agreements with developers of three projects in the next 18 months, including hotels in Sao Paulo and Rio and a beach resort.

Rio got 66 votes in the final round to host the Games, at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Copenhagen in October, while Madrid received 32.

According to an earlier Bloomberg article, the Olympics are expected to draw tens of thousands of people and require a doubling of current hotel space to 50,000 rooms.

Rio’s bid for the games proposed investments of $11.1bn. A government infrastructure program has already committed as much as 70 percent of that, according to the Rio Olympics Committee.

The organisers need to raise the remaining 30 percent, and expect ticket sales and sponsorships to yield $2.82bn.

The games will inject $51.1bn into Latin America’s largest economy through 2027 and add 120,000 jobs a year through 2016, according to a study by a Sao Paulo business school for the Ministry of Sports.

Jumeirah currently operates only one hotel in the Americas, the Essex House in New York, and is developing a polo-themed resort outside of Buenos Aires as well as resorts in Costa Rica, and Saint Thomas, Bloomberg reported.

Jumeirah views Brazil as a “top-tier” priority, Erlacher said. “Brazil is a healthy robust market with good supply and demand dynamics working in its favor,” he told the newswire in the interview.

Yas Island, Abu Dhabi’s major leisure and entertainment destination was selected as the World’s Leading Tourism Development Project at the World Travel Awards held earlier this week in London.

Launched in 1993 to acknowledge and recognise excellence in the world’s travel and tourism industry, the World Travel Awards are regarded as one of the highest achievement in the market, Yas Island’s developer said in a press release on Wednesday.

Thousands of votes are cast by travel professionals from 183,000 travel agencies, tour and transport companies and tourism organizations in over 160 countries across the globe, it added. Votes are also cast globally by fellow industry professionals in 919 different categories.

Yas Island was the host venue for the inaugural Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which took place on 1st November.

As well as the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit that will host a full calendar of motorsports event throughout the year, Aldar was responsible for the delivery of 7 brand new hotels, the custom made Yas Marina and all the infrastructure and race-related facilities.

The Yas Hotel is the flagship location for Aldar Hotels & Hospitality, a new division that aims to become a significant force in hospitality in the region, the developer said.

The first hotel to span a race track, The Yas Hotel has a 5,000 LED panel gridshell that drapes the structure in a vibrant shroud of lights.

According to Aldar, Yas Marina, which hosted over 100 yachts across the race weekend, will see the completion of the Yas Yacht Club and retail centre later this year.

Yas Links Golf Course, the first of its kind in the region will welcome its first players early in 2010.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi will become the world’s largest indoor theme park and the first ever Ferrari theme park in the world when it opens in 2010. The park will host over 20 state-of-the-art attractions, each designed to bring to life a different part of the Ferrari story.

Commenting on the award, Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, Chairman of Aldar Properties, said: “It is a great honour that Yas Island has been recognised at the World Travel Awards. The recent Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix held at Yas Island was a fantastic showcase of the remarkable evolution that is taking place in Abu Dhabi as part of the 2030 plan spearheaded by the government.”

The UAE has been identified among the top three nations likely to likely to become major tourist destinations in the next five years, according to an annual survey that ranks nations like retail brands.

The Country Brand Index, compiled by brand consultancy FutureBrand, found that this year, the United States had unseated Australia, which held the top spot for the past three years. Australia came in third this year with Canada rising to second place.

Looking ahead, the index identified the UAE, which includes the Gulf cities Dubai and Abu Dhabi, China, and Vietnam as the top three nations likely to become major tourist destinations in the next five years. Croatia, South Africa and India also made the list.

With the global economic crisis tightening purse-strings across the world, the survey showed that bargain-driven travel would remain a major trend, with consumers “thinking like financial analysts in chosing destinations and properties that are undervalued and booking trips that allow them to maintain the style they were accustomed to in boom times.”

New Zealand and France rounded up the top five country brands in this year’s index that included 102 countries.

“The Obama effect has seen the United States earn the coveted top spot for the first time in the fifth annual index,” FutureBrand, which is part of Interpublic Group of Companies, said in a statement.

“The revitalisation of Brand USA, and other factors, have resulted in the effect on Australia’s ranking. It highlights the importance of keeping a country brand fresh, relevant and engaging in a highly competitive international marketplace,” added Tim Riches, CEO FutureBrand Singapore.

The index is based on a survey of about 3,000 business and leisure travellers from nine countries.

In addition to branding countries, it also identifies global trends in travel and tourism, which the statement said was the world’s fastest growing economic sector.

The United States was seen as the ideal place for business, one of the top places for families, shopping and quality products, as well as one of the countries people wanted to visit whether for the first time or again.

The FutureBrand survey echoes a similar poll which showed that the United States was the most admired country globally, largely thanks to Obama’s global popularity.

This year’s index was conducted in conjunction with public relations firm Weber Shandwick.

Dubai’s Floating Bridge that was built as a quick solution to reduce traffic congestion over the Dubai Creek, will stay till 2014, according to a report on Friday.

“We are reviewing the project and the Floating Bridge will not be removed for another five years until at least 2014,” a top official at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) told the UAE-based Gulf News daily.

The Floating Bridge connects Riyadh Road, Dubai Courts and Creek Park on the Bur Dubai side with Baniyas Road, Deira City Centre and the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club on the Deira side.

The Floating Bridge has a capacity of 6,000 vehicles an hour, and was opened on 16 July 2007.

According to Gulf News, the bridge was built as a temporary solution to traffic congestion and it was to be replaced by the planned Seventh Crossing called ‘Dubai Smile’ by 2012.

The bridge is open daily from 0600 (6 AM) to 2200 (10 PM). During off hours, the bridge is opened to allow boats to pass through.

“The bridge will stay for another five years due to review of the several existing road projects. The construction of the Seventh Crossing has been delayed but it will eventually be built to replace the Floating Bridge,” the official told Gulf News.

TALLEST HOTEL: An artist’s impression of the Rose Rotana, set to open in Dubai next month.

Rotana, the UAE-based hotel group, has said that the world’s tallest hotel, planned for Dubai, is on course to open in mid-December.

The Rose Rayhaan on Sheikh Zayed Road will be 72 storeys and 333 metres high and will offer 481 rooms, suites and penthouses, Omer Z Kaddouri, senior vice president of Rotana, said.

The new hotel will operate under the group’s alcohol-free brand, the second in the group after the Al Marwa Rayhaan in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

“This alcohol-free option reflects our respect for the culture and beliefs of our guests and our dedication to fostering a new Arabia in today’s world,” said Daniel Mathew, general manager.

In September, Rotana said it is pushing ahead with expansion plans despite the economic slowdown and was on track to open 13 properties across the MENA region in 2009.

The Abu Dhabi-based chain, which currently manages 68 hotels in 26 cities across the region, has opened three hotels so far this year.

The most recent – the Al Marwa Rayhaan in Makkah – was its first in the kingdom and is part of the Rayhaan brand.
